How to Tell You've Got Wasps

Wasps aren't always easy to trace back to a nest. These are the signs that give them away:

  • Wasps coming and going from the same spot, such as a hole in the wall, a roof gap or a garden bed
  • A visible nest under eaves, in the roof cavity, in sheds or up in trees and shrubs
  • More wasps than usual around bins, outdoor meals, drinks or fallen fruit
  • A soft chewing or rustling sound inside a wall cavity or ceiling
  • Wasps turning aggressive in one part of the yard, especially near a fixed point

Common Canberra Wasps We Treat

Wasps nest and behave in different ways, which changes where we look and how we treat them. Here are the wasp species we're called out to deal with most across Canberra.

European Wasp

The big one for Canberra. Introduced, aggressive and quick to defend the nest, it builds large colonies in wall cavities, roof spaces and underground. Unlike a bee it can sting again and again, and a nest can hold tens of thousands by late summer.

English Wasp

A close cousin of the European wasp and just as short tempered near the nest. It favours sheltered spots such as wall voids, roof spaces and hollow logs, and is easily mistaken for its European relative.

Paper Wasp

Named for its papery, open celled nest that hangs from eaves, pergolas, fences and shrubs. Less aggressive than the European wasp, but it'll still sting hard if you wander too close to the nest.

Mud Dauber

A slender, solitary wasp that builds small mud nests on walls, under eaves and in sheds. Rarely aggressive and mostly harmless, though the nests look untidy and turn up in awkward spots.

More Than Just a Backyard Pest

  • Painful Stings

Wasps sting over and over and don't lose the stinger, so a disturbed nest can mean a rush of stings in seconds.

  • Allergic Reactions

For some people a single sting can set off a severe reaction that needs urgent medical help, a real risk with an active nest close by.

  • Fast Growing Colonies

A small spring nest can swell into many thousands of wasps by the end of summer if it's left alone.

  • Structural Nesting

Nests built inside wall cavities and roof spaces can stain ceilings, damage plaster and leave a mess behind once the colony dies off.

Our Process

How We Get Rid of Your Wasps

We find where the wasps are nesting, deal with the colony at its source, and help keep another one from setting up in the same spot.

01

Inspection

We inspect the property thoroughly, checking eaves, roof spaces, wall cavities, sheds and the garden, to locate the nest, work out the species and gauge how big the colony is.

02

Tailored Treatment

We treat the nest directly with the right method for the species and location, timed and handled to clear the colony while keeping people and pets well clear.

03

Prevention

Where it's safe to do so, we remove the treated nest and tidy the area so there's nothing left to draw activity back.

04

Ongoing Protection

We point out what's drawing wasps to the property and offer follow up visits through the warmer months to keep them from coming back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I try to remove a wasp nest myself?

It's not worth the risk. European wasps in particular turn aggressive fast and sting over and over, and disturbing a nest can bring the whole colony out at once. We've got the gear and the know how to clear it without anyone getting stung.

Are wasp treatments safe for children and pets?

Yes. We treat the nest directly and keep the area clear while we work, then let you know when it's safe to use the space again. We'll talk you through anything you need to know to keep everyone safe.

How do wasps get into the house?

Through gaps you'd never think twice about, such as roof gaps, weep holes, gaps around pipes and subfloor vents. Wasps also nest in wall cavities and roof voids. Part of our job is finding those spots and sealing them once the nest is cleared.

There are only a few wasps around, is it still worth treating?

Definitely. A handful of wasps early in the season often means a nest is just getting going. Sorting it early is far easier and safer than waiting until the colony builds up to thousands over summer.

How long does it take to clear a nest?

Most nests are treated in a single visit, and activity usually drops off within a day or so as the colony dies down. We'll follow up if needed to make sure it's fully cleared.

Don’t Let Wasps Take Over Your Property

Wasps slipping in and out of the eaves, more of them around the yard than usual, or a nest you've spotted up high can all point to a colony setting up on your property. We assess the activity and help work out how the wasps are getting in and what's keeping them there.
