Rodent Control
in Canberra

A scratching in the ceiling at night, droppings behind the pantry, a chewed cable in the shed — rodents rarely announce themselves until they’re well settled in. And with Canberra’s cold winters, homes and businesses make an appealing place to shelter and breed.

The catch with rats and mice is how fast they multiply, and how much damage they do while they’re at it — gnawing through wiring, insulation and stored goods, and spreading disease as they go. A couple of traps from the hardware store rarely keeps up. Our licensed technicians find the runs and entry points, control the problem safely around your family and pets, and help you seal the gaps so it doesn’t start over the following season.

How to Tell You've
Got Rodents

Rodents are good at staying out of sight. These are the signs that give them away:

  • Droppings along skirting boards, in cupboards or the pantry
  • Scratching, scurrying or gnawing sounds in the roof or walls, usually at night
  • Chewed wiring, packaging, insulation or timber
  • Greasy rub marks along walls, pipes and regular runways
  • A musty, ammonia-like smell, or nests of shredded material in quiet spots

Common Canberra
Rodents We Treat

Rats and mice have different habits, nesting spots and entry points. Here are some of the common rodent species we’re called out to deal with across Canberra.

House Mouse

Small, grey-brown and quick to breed, the house mouse squeezes through gaps the size of a pencil. It nests in wall cavities, cupboards and roof spaces, and a single pair can turn into an infestation in weeks.

Roof Rat

Also called the black rat — a lean, agile climber that gets into roof voids and upper walls via trees, cables and downpipes. The usual culprit behind night-time scratching overhead.

Norway Rat

The larger brown rat, or sewer rat. A strong burrower, it prefers ground level — subfloors, drains, garden burrows and beneath sheds — and can chew through surprisingly tough materials.

Bush Rat

A native rat found on the fringes of Canberra properties backing onto reserves and bushland. Usually stays outdoors, but will move into subfloors and sheds when food and shelter are on offer.

More Than
Just a Nuisance

  • Fire Risk

Rats and mice gnaw constantly, and chewed electrical wiring in the roof or walls is a genuine fire hazard.

  • Disease

Rodents spread bacteria and disease through their droppings, urine and the surfaces they contaminate as they move about.

  • They Attract More

They reproduce rapidly — a small problem becomes a serious infestation in a matter of weeks if it's left alone.

  • Property Damage

Beyond wiring, they chew through insulation, packaging, timber and stored goods, and their nesting makes a mess of roof spaces.

Rodent Control

Frequently
Asked Questions

How do I get rid of rats and mice for good?

The lasting fix is a combination of controlling the rodents already inside and sealing the gaps they're using to get in. Traps and bait alone won't hold if the entry points are still open, which is why we treat and proof together.

Are rodent treatments safe for children and pets?

Yes. We place bait and traps in secure, tamper-resistant stations kept well away from children and pets, and we'll talk you through anything you need to know to keep everyone safe.

How do rodents get into the house?

Through gaps you'd never think twice about — mice fit through a hole the size of a pencil. Common ways in are roof gaps, weep holes, gaps around pipes, subfloor vents and along overhanging branches. Part of our job is finding and sealing them.

I only hear them at night — is it still worth treating?

Definitely. Rodents are most active after dark, so night-time scratching in the roof is usually the first clear sign. The sooner it's dealt with, the less damage and breeding you're left to clean up after.

How long does it take to clear an infestation?

It depends on the size of the problem, but most are brought under control within a couple of weeks. We'll follow up to make sure activity has stopped and recommend proofing to keep it that way.
